Human remains were discovered in the 1300 block. On Monday, the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed what a grieving family feared: those remains belong to Laniyah. The girl called “NiNi,” who worked at Carlie C’s IGA, was found near the road motorists travel daily. But this is not only a story of remains found. It is a story of a man in handcuffs. Kabron Markel Thaggard, 22, of Fayetteville, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and concealment of a body. He is held at the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond, his first appearance scheduled for Tuesday. “It is utterly horrific that young Laniyah’s life was cut short in such a brutal manner, but uncovering her remains at last at least offers her grieving family some long-awaited answers and a measure of closure,” officials stated. For a community that has watched too many young Black girls disappear into statistics, the arrest is a crack in the wall of indifference. Laniyah was not a runaway. She was somebody’s daughter, somebody’s hope, somebody’s child — and now she is somebody’s case file in a courtroom. The investigation remains active. The woods have spoken. A suspect sits in custody. And a family, after years of empty chairs, finally knows where their girl lies. @Highlight reels”.
