Kinda Interesting Things #240: The Yagura Fire Tower in Little Tokyo If you’re walking near the Japanese Village Plaza in LA’s Little Tokyo, you’ll come across this red tower that seems to glow like a beacon standing tall above the street. This is the Yagura Fire Tower by David Hyun. Little Tokyo is one of the oldest and most important Japanese American neighborhoods in the U.S. Starting in the late 19th century, Japanese immigrants began settling in LA — drawn by opportunity after the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act and increasingly concentrated along First Street. It eventually grew into the largest Japanese community in the country. Then came World War II. Residents were forcibly removed and incarcerated, leaving empty streets and shuttered storefronts behind. After the war, the community returned and rebuilt, but by the 1960s and 70s, redevelopment pressure and urban decline threatened to erase Little Tokyo’s identity. Amid that challenge, community leaders and the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency sought ways to revitalize Little Tokyo while sustaining its cultural roots. In this context, the Japanese Village Plaza was conceived, opening in 1978. Its design fused architectural references to traditional Japanese villages. At the heart of this effort was David Hyun, a pioneering Korean-American architect and one of the first Korean American architects practicing in the U.S, was selected to design Japanese Village Plaza and its landmark: the Yagura Fire Tower. He described the plaza’s intention “not just as a shopping center but as the scene of many colorful events which harkened back to the culture of the Old Country.” Sources: “Japanese Village Plaza” (Historic Districts, Planning Districts and Multi-Property Resources, Survey LA, 2016) “Japanese Village Plaza Receives Award” (LA Times, 1986) “Little Tokyo Historic District” (National Park Service) “David Hyun and architectural hybridity: first architect in the history of Korean immigration to America” (Journal of Asian Architecture and Building Engineering, Myengsoo Seo and Sujin Kim, 2024) “Shopping Mall in Little Tokyo” (Discover Nikkei, 2016) #losangeles #DidYouKnow #littletokyo #lahistory
